TEAM MARK
In 2018 during a round of cancer treatment, Mark Kourey wanted to do something to help people impacted by cancer and to support his amazing healthcare team at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK). He learned about Fred’s Team and their mission to raise critical funds for cancer research and put himself on the waitlist to run the upcoming marathon. When Mark heard the news he was accepted to the team, knowing he was not a runner, was still in treatment, and that the marathon was only 4 months away, he got a pair of running sneakers and started training. With the support of his family, friends, and doctors at MSK, he completed the marathon raising over $6k. While celebrating after the marathon, Mark’s college buddy Tommy suggested running the next year with several of his friends forming Fred’s Team Mark!
MARK’S STORY
Mark was a vibrant, funny, caring, and courageous friend and his commitment to support cancer research will live on through Mark’s Team. Mark’s life shifted in an unexpected direction when he was diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer in 2010. In the years since he was impacted multiple times by the news that his cancer continued to spread. But thanks to recent discoveries, his team of doctors at MSK were able to pinpoint the cancer growth and use treatments including surgeries, radiation, and drug regimens to minimize the impact and maintain his quality of life for 13 years. On May 10th, 2023 Mark ended his long battle and now it is up to us to continue his mission to help others.
